After time off for some surgical work on my rotator cuff, I’m easing back into the swing of things – and even though I won’t be pitching any time soon (never could actually), I have a few observations:
ITEM: The Telegraph Prep Football Picks are a neck-and-neck battle.
COMMENT: Well, you know what they say – I only know about soccer and swimming.
ITEM: Has Edwardsville come back to the pack?
COMMENT: In football, EHS might not be as dominant as it has been in recent years. They even got thrashed by Collinsville. That hasn’t happened since the year I started work at The Telegraph and Greg Shashack was still in high school. But Tiger haters out there best make their hay while the sun shines -what passes for great at most schools is considered sub-par at EHS.
ITEM: SIUE in D-I
COMMENT: Soccer is paving the way for the rest of the sports at SIU Edwardsville (there I go again with the soccer.) It’s going to be exciting.
ITEM: Dodgers go up on Cubs in NLDS.
COMMENT: Cub-ness is alive and well. This may sound evil-spirited, but I find myself nearly as excited when the Cubbies lose as when the Cardinals win. I was laughing out loud at the TV screen around midnight Thursday when L.A. finished off its 10-3 win to go up two games to none. I guess I need to work on some issues.
ITEM: Rays go up on White Sox in ALDS.
COMMENT: I don’t feel the same way about the Pale Hose. I know they’re a Chicago team, but I kind of like them (don’t tell anybody). Maybe it’s because they’re NOT the Cubs.
ITEM: Jim Haslett takes over as Rams head coach from Scott Linehan.
COMMENT: I was excited when Haseltt came to town as the Rams’ defenseive coordinator. After all those battles against his Saints teams, I figured he would instill the same tougnhness in the Rams defense. It didnt happen, but there was more to that than just Haslett – such as players who maybe just weren’t good enough. ANYWAY – Haslett has the rest of the season to get the Rams on track and maybe give himself a shot at the job on a permanent basis. At least he’s more interesting than Linehan.
ITEM: Mizzou’s Heisman Chase.
COMMENT: Chase Daniels is good – very good. But a Heisman Trophy winner from Ol’ Mizzou? It could very well happen. The Tigers haven’t stubbed their toes yet and playing for a winner will help Daniels’ chances.
ITEM: My shoulder hurts.
COMMENT: Shut up and do your physical therapy.
